As a sustainable and eco-conscious swimsuit brand, we are constantly trying to improve and familiarize ourselves with the environmental issues related to the swimsuit industry. We were excited to learn about fabrics that have been recycled from waste and pollution and saw it as a perfect opportunity to include in our swim line.
Italian Carvico Vita (ECONYL®)
Swimsuits are commonly made mostly from Nylon.
The production of new Nylon material creates greenhouse gases such as nitrous oxide, which is about 300 times more potent than carbon dioxide. Derived from crude oil, Nylon is also a type of plastic that undergoes intensive chemical processes that also contributes to significant water pollution in order to create and color the extremely versatile, stretchy material. Because of this, Nylon is not biodegradable, contributing to the harm of nature, especially marine life and environments.
Currently, our chosen swimsuit fabric, Italian Carvico Vita, is composed of 78% ECONYL® regenerated Nylon and 22% Elastane, making it more sustainable than other commonly used swimsuit fabrics and better for the earth. ECONYL® Nylon, made by a sustainable and eco-conscious manufacturer called Aquafil, is transformed from Nylon waste that pollutes the earth, harming both animal and human health. ECONYL® Nylon is certified recycled material made from used fishing nets, fabric scraps, old carpets, and industrial plastic collected from our oceans. According to the ECONYL® website, it also saves approximately 70,000 barrels of crude oil and reduces Nylon's global warming impact by up to 90%.
